Undine
Nixies, water~spirits
Weeping bitterly because of the want of a soul
Beginning to shrink the unearthly creature to something of his own flesh and blood
Half shy, half trusting
Neither fearing nor devising evil
He was forced to believe that no evil could be feared from an appearance so pleasing
Knit his brows
You may think her frolics very delightful, but to have her dancing about you the whole day long, and to never hear her speak one word of sense
And a fair girl, of wondrous beauty, sprang laughing in
In fixed astonishment
Charmed with her graceful figure and viewed her lovely features
I come out of the forest, you lovely little vision
Hard to withdraw his gaze from her wild emotion, gentleness & beauty
Hearts of anxiety, our eyes find no sleep
In devout thought
Clad in mourning apparel
The watery glass
For our lost darling again and again
Water dripping from her golden hair
Eyes blue and bright as the sea or sky
A new ascendancy over him
All owing to her sportive and wayward spirit
He resoled
Only impelled him
Too full of tricks
His head swam with the swelling
Again cloudless
In quest of her
She sang the following verse with the warbling sweetness of a bird
Touch your heart
Forgetting her waywardness
Undine at the knights feet on the grass
My enterprise before me
And rushed furiously forward with me
Arrested my horses course
In the fewest words
You miserable thing
Measureless abyss
Are you angry at my remaining?
The love of home
Grown upon the graves
The sad recollections
Those unspeakably sweet feelings
Pour upon
He then pronounced a few solemn words of the ceremony, and made them one.
